To everyone who missed last night’s meeting, it was well worth attending. We had ten members: 9 females and Cary….but he handled being in the minority with his usual grace and  savoir faire.

We had one new member (well new to our in-person meetings) but those of us on the list know her as mediamavis. Mavis is an editor at Architectural Products, does some freelance writing and just started a blog called thekitchenbitch. Welcome aboard, Mavis! To know us is to love us (well, usually).

Our topic was SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-framed. We each shared a goal (or two) that we plan on reaching, stated target completion dates and will periodically check in at meetings to see how we’re doing. To avoid the wrath of the group, we’re all pretty focused on reaching these goals (or having to answer to Lauren…who btw, did an awesome job of leading us).

Next month’s meeting in on May 18th. Try and attend. The space is wonderful….cozy, comfy, spacious…and the wifi works! Thanks, Lauren, for moving there and opening it up to our group!

Help a small business grow with the click of a mouse… nominate them in the “Love a Local Business” campaign from Intuit. Typing a few kind words about your favorite local hangout or service provider literally puts them “on the map”—not to mention gives them a chance to win a $1000 Intuit Growth Grant. Or nominate your own business and share why you love what you do.

The fourth installment of estimated taxes are due today. See the IRS e-file page to pay online.

I’ve seen some chatter on a few writers’ forums lately about rights, especially when it comes to freelancing for a publication that wants to re-use your work in another medium (i.e. your print piece gets posted online). The American Society of Journalists and Authors has lots of free resources on this topic, including RIGHTS 101: What Writers Should Know About All-Rights and Work-Made-For-Hire Contracts and HOW TO DEAL WITH INDEMNIFICATION CLAUSES - both are excellent reads and essential knowledge for negotiating contracts.

Plus, just found this terrific collection of resources for writers and editors compiled by Pat McNees, including stuff on finding agents, writing book proposals, entering contests, finding networks, exploring new media trends, trying alternative marketing strategies and much much more.

Cheers!

OK. This should prove nice and addictive….as if Twitter isn’t giving us enough distraction. I’m having trouble finding time to work! Happy 2009 Everyone.

This seems to be a common question nowadays as investors (as well as Savers) watch the demise of banks, investment firms and the like.

In this segment from today’s NPR’s Morning Edition, Knight Kiplinger (editor in chief of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance) discusses investment and saving solutions that won’t make you lose sleep. Good advice for small biz owners who are currently looking for safer places to sock away their earnings.

As I’ve been recently thinking about this topic lately — not to mention trying to spread the word about shopping locally — I decided to write an article about it, which just got published on Biznik.

Feel free to add your own ideas for gift giving, here on the blog or on the Biznik page.

The Independent Writers of Chicago has a policy against writing on spec. Speechwriter Dan Conley did it. What’s your stance? (If you’re not a writer, still feel free to chime in.)

The recent article Keeping the Creativity Flowing from Advertising Age’s Small Agency Diary was a good reminder–especially for those of us that are plugged in to our email 24-7.

I’m actually in the “simmering” stage he mentions with a few projects: trying to step back from it, so I can return with a fresh eye. And I’ve always been a fan of detaching myself from phone/email a few times during the day–whether it’s taking a walk or catching up on design magazines.

Anyone have other ideas for keeping the creativity flowing?
