Fellow member Linda Cassady and I had started mapping out a new design for my home office before the storm hit in August, and I still hope to do a little re-design once our place is rebuilt. I want to add some tall shelving so I can store more books and magazines on shelves (not in boxes in the basement) and make better use of the empty spaces under my second desk (storage? rolling bins for files or office supplies?) and, much as I don’t like the idea of sacrificing art, I think I’m going to take down a large framed movie poster I had hanging next to my desk and substitute a large long-term calendar, which will help me keep the big picture in mind.

So if I could do any reorganizing of my office (hey, I totally can), that’s what I would do. What would you do? I would love to hear some ideas.

Hi, I organize offices for a living and find many solutions that fit a person’s taste for art while still creating an efficient working space. In your case, shelves are a great idea. I like the option to close the bottom half of the shelf with doors leaving the top half open for more books or art and pictures to display. Choose one shelf at eye level for your favorites objects. Also, sit a few books on their side instead and place a bowl on top, for example. Baskets or stylish boxes work well too. They can hold some of your office supplies while looking cool. Clip out your favorite articles from the magazines and save those in a folder or binder. I find that magazines take up far more shelf “Real Estate”. Keeping the magazines to a minimum will be a good way to minimize clutter.

Jenni, with your microburst-influenced moving this summer you’ve got a one-woman Trading Spacing going on! Leave it to you to take a bad situation and turn it into a chance to redesign and reorganize.

Anyway, this is so weird because I was just replanning my office last night. I like that my desk is by the window so that I can see the lake. Helps me stay grounded on those hectic days.

I basically need to go through all my books and relocate/group my resources. For example, I’d like my favorite poetry and fiction books on the same shelf…wait, that will take more than one shelf!

I aspire to get my office out of my bedroom…talk about bad feng shui! Seriously, I think the only I would really like is a aeron chair. And a monitor and keyboard so that I don’t have to do all my typing on my powerbook which gets super hot. So, mostly ergonomic issues. Eventually…
