After weeks of promos telling us to “get ready”, the new totally ripped apart re-designed Tribune launched today.

Hmm…same day that the market plunges 700+ points. Interesting coincidence.

As someone who still really enjoys reading newspapers, here’s my take on the “new” Trib:
  • there are a whole lotta ads…big ones. They must be giving super duper rate breaks to suddenly get all these advertisers in there!
  • it’s not really like Red Eye. It’s easier to find what you’re looking for in Red Eye.
  • It’s not really like USA Today. USA Today is a national newspaper designed for quick reads. The Trib is/was a local metro paper which now carries a lot of bylines from writers at other papers across the country.
  • Seth Godin was right about the death of newspapers…only it’s happening sooner than he predicted.
  • I can now get through all four of my morning papers much quicker, since there’s not much to read in this one.
I’ll miss the storytelling that makes a wonderful read. But hopefully, the Times and WSJ won’t decide to reinvent themselves any time soon.

Wow, we’ve had a busy couple of media weeks:

My project, ChronicBabe.com, was profiled today in the Ocala Star-Banner

Scott Robbin was quoted in a story about Songza in the New York Times and was featured in the Chicago Tribune

Strange Closets has featured Amy Karatz twice. Yup, twice!

Lidia Varesco was featured as Guest Designer of the Friday Download on the The Blah, Blah, Blahg

A bunch of publications have featured Jackie Sloane in recent weeks, like the Chicago Tribune, the Red Eye, Newsday, and once again in the Trib. You go girl!

Elizabeth McQuern is in a Time Out Chicago article talking about her decision to shut down

…and if I left anyone off, please do let me know and I’ll add you to the list! I love to spread the word about the good work our fellow ideXchangers are doing, and - members - please feel free to post your own stories when you have media coverage.

Designers: want to get some (relatively) free PR? Crescent Hills Books, publisher of fine design books, has several calls for entries for upcoming books on design-related topics. I especially like the concept of The BEST Ads You’ve Never Seen — a book that will show off those great ideas that were nixed by the client.

And if you have a hip or stylish office you want to show off… send in your photos for the upcoming book, Boutique Offices by HarperCollins Publishers. (thanks to the MarketingMixBlog for this posting)

Are you an emerging Chicago author looking for promotions? The city would like to sell your donated books.
